Osteoporosis is far too accepted as being inevitable. Sure, loss of calcium from the bones increases as we age – but rather than just accept it, why not look at why it happens and do something to prevent it.
People do not do anything about osteoporosis until it becomes a problem. Yet it never needs to BE a problem. It has been scientifically proven in multiple studies that weight training prevents osteoporosis. So if osteoporosis is an issue for you – then add this it to your fitness goals
“Aim to not lose ANY bone density”
So how does weight training work to prevent osteoporosis?
Muscles are attached by tendons to bones.  When your are exercising using weights, signals are sent to both the muscles and the bones to say “Hey we have to get stronger to deal with this action†That signal fires up the bodys natural systems to send more nutrition carrying blood to the muscle, and that nutrition includes calcium; thereby not only preventing osteoporosis but preventing muscle loss as well.
And it’s not just weight training that helps prevent osteoporosis. Any activity that involves cardio-vascular fitness transports blood in the body – and this helps transport calcium to bones. The more intense the exercise – the more blood gets pushed around the body, so maybe it’s time to boost up your fitness program from that daily 30 minute walk and the light weights, and get some real cardio and weight training in there. Make your exercise time more effective – I’m sorry – Im a performance coach and I just hate seeing time wasted doing something that is no longer effective!
You don’t need to add more time to your fitness program. Instead, gradually build up your cardio intenity using High Intensity Interval Training and get those muscles growing and blood pumping by increasing those weights or using progression techniques.
Using a well constructed program is safe, controlled, and effective. And as always – check with your medical advisor before undertaking and new form of exercise.
BONUS – The psychological benefits of weight training are tremendous. It gives you an uplifted feeling right throughout the day!
