Study Shows How Light Receptors In Eye Play Key Role In Setting Biological Clock

Biologists at the University of Virginia have discovered a switching mechanism in the eye that plays a key role in regulating the sleep/wake cycles in mammals. The new finding demonstrates that light receptor cells in the eye are central to setting the rhythms of the brain's primary timekeeper, the suprachiasmatic nuclei, which regulates activity and rest cycles.

RNIB Backs Pensioner's Fight For Sight Saving Treatment Denied By Barnet NHS

Barnet PCT is routinely forcing patients in its care to either pay for sight saving treatment or go blind, says the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB). Peter Mulvie, 84, of Golders Green, is just one of several patients being supported by RNIB in their bid for treatment from Barnet PCT (Primary Care Trust). He is blind in his left eye and has the aggressive eye disease wet age-related macular degeneration (wet AMD) in his right eye.

Approximately half of all adults in the United States aged 20 and older have refraction errors in their eyes that result in less than 20/20 vision, according to an article released on August 11, 2008 in the Archives of Ophthalmology, one of the JAMA/Archives journals. When the eye does not properly focus light on the retina, it results in nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism.

Eye Abnormality Associated With Increased Heart Disease Death

Abnormalities of the retina, the light sensitive tissue at the back of the eye, are associated with an increased risk of death from heart disease, finds research published ahead of print in the Heart. A higher than normal risk was found in people without diabetes, a disease that is known to boost the risk of coronary artery disease, the findings show.

Dachshund Gene Gives Clue To An Inherited Human Blindness

Scientists have discovered that a mutation in a dachshund gene called NPHP4 is involved in early onset cone rod dystrophy, a type of retinal degenerative disorder that occurs naturally in humans and dogs and eventually leads to blindness. The study is the work of Dr Frode Lingaas of the Norwegian School of Veterinary Science and other colleagues in Norway, Sweden and the US and is published in the 7th August online before print issue of Genome Research.
