FDA Allows Phase 2 Study For Sound Pharmaceuticals' Novel Drug To Prevent Chemotherapy Induced Hearing Loss

Sound Pharmaceuticals (SPI) has received FDA notification that it may proceed with its Phase II study to prevent chemotherapy induced hearing loss. The Ph-II study will enroll 80 patients with advanced head and neck, and non-small cell lung cancer at the National Center for Rehabilitative Auditory Research at the Veterans Administration Hospital and the Oregon Health and Science University in Portland, Oregon.

Free Service Improves GP Access For Deaf Patients, UK

Deaf patients are now able to enjoy better access to GP services thanks to a new partnership between SignHealth - the healthcare charity for Deaf people - and EMIS, the UK's leading provider of GP systems. The charity's web-based SignTranslate communication program for Deaf people is being made available free of charge to all GP practices in England until 31st July 2009 - underpinned by one year of funding from SignHealth.

Sound Pharmaceuticals Files Second IND With The FDA For The Prevention Of Chemotherapy Induced Hearing Loss In Advanced Stage Cancer

Sound Pharmaceuticals (SPI) has filed an Investigational New Drug Application with the FDA for the clinical testing of a proprietary formulation of ebselen for the prevention of chemotherapy induced hearing loss or ototoxicity. The oral capsule containing ebselen, SPI-3005, will be tested in advanced stage lung cancer and head and neck cancer patients receiving platinum based chemotherapy.

Ultrasonic Frogs Able To Tune Their Ears To Different Frequencies Could Have Implications For Human Hearing

Researchers have discovered that a frog that lives near noisy springs in central China can tune its ears to different sound frequencies, much like the tuner on a radio can shift from one frequency to another. FDA Reaches Settlement With California Hearing Device Maker

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has reached a settlement with California hearing device manufacturer Advanced Bionics LLC and its president and CEO Jeffrey Greiner over alleged violations of federal law. The alleged violations involved the failure to notify the FDA of a change of outside supplier or vendor, which may have exposed patients to unnecessary health risks, such as device failure and surgery.

The Health Professions Council (HPC) and the Hearing Aid Council (HAC) have launched a joint consultation on the standards of proficiency and the threshold level of qualification for entry to the Hearing Aid Audiologists/Dispensers part of the HPC register. Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine discovered that the activity of a specific family of nanometer-sized molecular motors called myosin-I is regulated by force. The motor puts tension on cellular springs that allow vibrations to be detected within the body.
