THYROID HORMONE SUPPLEMENTS
The thyroid controls metabolism and the release
of energy throughout the body.
The thyroid gland is an endocrine gland located just
under the Adam's apple in the throat. It secretes tyroxine
hormone into the bloodstream to control the body's metabolism,
the rate at which the body burns calories for energy.
- Thyroid decline affects every cell in our body,
resulting in a wide range of age-related problems
- Increased Body Fat & Weight Gain - thyroxine
also controls the body's utilization of fat.
- Brain Function - a decline in the secretion of hormones
from the thyroid gland (hypothyroidism) can result
in poor concentration, confusion, memory problems.
- Temperature Control - cold hands and feet
- Menstrual problems
- Sleep disorders
- Dry skin, thinning hair
- Low energy levels.
- Musculoskeletal - an underactive thyroid is also
thought to cause fibromyalgia.
Thyroid Function Decreases With Age
Thyroid deficiency [hypothyroidism] most often affects
women over 40. This can be remedied by taking thyroid
supplements, overcoming a broad range of aging disorders.
As many as 15 to 20% of women over age 60 may have
subclinical hypothyroidism, but unfortunately, most
doctors believe there to be no thyroid pathology requiring
treatment. Many of these women develop symptoms, hastening
their aging.
One distinct form of hypothyroidism, diagnosed as thyroid
deficiency syndrome, may be caused by a condition called
Hashimoto's thyroiditis. This is an autoimmune disease,
90% of sufferers being women.
Deficiency requiring supplementation is determined
by measuring the Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) .
As thyroid hormones levels decrease, TSH levels rise.
Because thyroid function changes with age, it is helpful
to monitor TSH levels periodically.
Thyroid Supplements
Thyroid supplements are available in two forms:
- Synthetic Thyroid Supplements -
usually only comprise of one of the thyroid hormones,
(such as, T3 or T4),
- Whole-natural Thyroid Supplements
- include a fuller spectrum of thyroid hormones (including
T1, T2, T3 and T4).
A small daily serving of whole thyroid extract as a
dietary supplement has proven beneficial, especially
when combined with minerals and vitamins.
Dosages of whole thyroid extracts depend on your age
and thyroid condition. As an approximate guide:
Take 15mg to 30mg daily, increasing to 60mg daily after
a couple of weeks if necessary.
If you are over 40 years of age and have no overt endocrine
disease and you wish to slow the aging process, just
a small regular whole thyroid supplement can raise energy
levels, allow clearer thinking and improve bowel function.
One grain (equivalent to 60mg) or higher dosages are
potent and usually require temperature monitoring and
occasional blood tests.
Those with more-serious thyroid conditions are often
be prescribed one grain. Dosages under a physician's
guidance can often reach three to five grains daily.
Dosages of more than one grain are usually increased
by a grain over one to two weeks.
Quarter grain and half grain whole thyroid supplements
(15mg to 30mg)) provide less potency and are used to
support an aging thyroid condition. However, long-term
use of low dose whole thyroid extracts may also require
occasional breaks and monitoring.
Side Effects
Reduce or stop thyroid supplementation if you feel
unwell, your rising-from-bed-in-the-morning temperature
is over 98.2 degrees Fahrenheit, your resting pulse
is more than 75 beats a minute or your thyroid function
blood tests are abnormal.
