Flaxseed To Reduce Hot Flushes

A hot flush, or hot flash is a flush of intense warmth across much of the body, that may be accompanied by sweating, reddening of the skin, and occasionally, cold shivers.

The medically offered remedy for hot flushes is oestrogen. However, many postmenopausal women refuse to take oestrogen because of a perceived increased risk of breast cancer. The traditional, popular natural alternative to HRT has been black cohosh, however new data from the Mayo Clinic suggests that "dietary therapy using flaxseed may also decrease hot flushes in postmenopausal women who do not take oestrogen".

About Flaxseed

Flaxseed Oil Natural Remedy For Hot Flushes

Flaxseed, a rich source of plant omega-3 and lignans. Studies have shown flaxseed oil may reduce the frequency of hot flushes by almost 60 per cent.

Daily supplements of flaxseed consisting of 40 grams of crushed flaxseed for six weeks produced positive results.

Participants reported that the frequency of hot flashes decreased 50 per cent over six weeks, and the overall hot flash score decreased an average 57 per cent for the women who completed the trial.

The researchers also report improvements mood, joint or muscle pain, chills and sweating among the participants.

Researchers proposed that the phyto-oestrogen content of flaxseed [mainly lignans] accounted for the apparent benefits. Lignans are antioxidants with weak oestrogen-emulating characteristics.

Some lignans also have some anti-cancer effects. The anti-oestrogen properties of Flaxseed have been claimed to decrease breast cancer risk.
