Phytosterols Lower Cholesterol For Menopausal Women
Phytosterols help reduce cholesterol levels
for women during menopause.
Menopause is not an easy passage for many women. With
symptoms ranging from mood swings, hot flushes, sore
breasts, higher cholesterol levels and aching joints,
the medical world has yet to come up with a fully acceptable
response to helping women with this natural event.
Fortunately, there are some natural ingredients that
have proven helpful to many women, without side effects
common to drug ‘remedies’. Side effects
to estrogen may include breast tenderness, nausea, headaches,
leg cramps, irregular bleeding, weight gain and bloating.
Phytosterols
is one such ingredient. Phytosterols help combat the
increasing cholesterol levels in women during menopause.
Phytosterol-enriched products may reduce apolipoprotein
levels by up to four per cent, increasing heart health.
Numerous clinical trials also report that daily consumption
of 1.5 to 3 grams of phytosterols/-stanols can reduce
total cholesterol levels by eight to 17 per cent, representing
a significant reduction in the risk of cardiovascular
disease.
The new study, supplemented the diets of 46 people,
with an average age of 50.6, with 20 g low-fat margarine
[35 per cent fat] and 250 ml low-fat milk [0.7 per cent
fat]. This gave a total plant sterol dose of 2.3 g per
day.
The particpants all had LDL cholesterol levels in the
3.0 to 5.5 mmol/l range, considered as mildly hypercholesterolemic.
By combining two different plant sterol-enriched foods
as part of a low-fat diet researchers found it lead
to on average 7.7% reduction in LDL cholesterol levels.
Phytosterols can also be found in Soy
Isoflavones
