EYESIGHT TREATMENTS - MACULAR DEGENERATION
Macular degeneration is where the
center of the inner lining of the eye, known as the
macula area of the retina, suffers thinning, atrophy,
and in some cases bleeding.
This can result in loss of central vision, which entails
inability to see fine details, to read, or to recognize
faces. Macular degeneration is leading cause of central
vision loss [blindness] and in the United States today
for those over the age of fifty years.

Preventing Macular Degeneration
There are three nutritional and drug regimes currently
used to help prevent the onset of macular degeneration:
Homeopathic - a combination of high-dose
beta-carotene, vitamin C, vitamin E, and zinc has been
shown [The Age-Related-Study] to reduce the risk of
developing advanced AMD by about 25 percent in those
patients who have earlier but significant forms of the
disease.
More recent studies [Age-Related Eye Disease Study
2] are looking at the potential benefits of lutein,
zeaxanthine, and fish oil. No findings have been released
to date.
Statins - drugs used for reducing
cholesterol levels, are also proving to be effective
in prevention of AMD, and in slowing its progression.
Treatments For Macular Degeneration
Eye drops and injections for wet [age-related] AMD
are two recent and radical treatment protocols for macualar
degeneration
Anecortave acetate [Retanne] - an
anti-angiogenic drug injected behind the eye, reducing
the risk of neovascular [wet] AMD in high-risk patients.
