Mini Face Lifts

The Mini-Facelift is his is a quick and discreet procedure suited to busy executives and those who do not have time for the prolonged recovery of a full face lift.

It is regarded as a maintenance procedure, best suited for people in their 30s and 50s who have good skin tone, but are starting to see some laxity in their lower face around the jaw. It suits those who don’t really require a full facelift, but still want to reverse and hold off the aging process.

It is commonly used by celebrities, who do not want any procedures to be noticeable.

The differences to the traditional facelift are:

  • The scar is shorter
  • There are fewer complications, such as possible hair loss around the incisions
  • There is also a little less bruising and swelling of the face post-operatively
  • There''s very little need for bandages after the surgery
  • The recovery period is much quicker - the patient can usually return to work after five to seven days

How do I know I need a mini-face lift?

As a face ages, the jaw line changes from being oval to square in shape. This is the result of drooping of the mini-facial muscles [and skin], and the beginning of jowl formation. There is often some laxity in the neck muscles, resulting in a loss of definition of the neck and jaw line.

Face lifting elevates sagging skin, muscle and fat. It also adjusts the suspension of skin around the neck and jaw, bringing back a youthful definition.

Every patient is different in the aging of their face - often depending on what as contributed to skin laxity and fat accumulation, fat degeneration and sagging. This might be from rapid weight loss, stress, too much alchohol or smoking. Whilst we will all eventually show signs of aging in the face, the variance in age is largely attributed to physical attributes and lifestyle.

How do I know if I am a good candidate?

All surgeons will consult with you prior to scheduling the surgery. In general, if you are over 45, a non-smoker, and physically healthy and emotionally stable, you shouldn't have an problems getting a surgeon to perform the procedure. There must be enough saggy loose skin to trim and the muscle underneath needs to be relatively in good condition.

You will not be a good candidate if you have diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes or heart disease. also, anyone with receding hairline must recognise that the scars will be quite obvious with no hair cover.

An incision is made around the ear, but not in the hairline. There is also a small incision underneath the chin. All of the scars are well concealed in skin folds.

What's involved in a mini-face lift?

The purpose of a mini-facelift is to recreate the youthful contours of the jaw line, neck and cheekbones. It does not address any sagging of upper or lower eyelids or the brow. These will require additional procedures, and are often combined with the mini-face lift.

Incisions are made just under the hairline, about an inch up from the top of the ear lobe - then down in front of the top cartilage rim of the ear, behind the targus [the cartilage flap at the front of the ear], then behind the ear in the natural crease. This results in a very discrete scar that will fade.

The platysma muscle in the neck and the fascia joining into the muscles in the face are tightened. The deeper sagging facial tissues are fixed to a point in the temple fascia using three internal sutures. By vertically lifting the fallen muscle and fat tissues of the face and neck, the cheeks, jowls and neck will return to their correct position. This has a much longer lasting effect that skin tightening alone.

Lifting and internally suspending the cheek fat pads using the so called 'volumetric' method enhances the full youthful look. Unwanted fat pads under the chin can be removed using fine-bore liposuction. this greatly enhances the neck appearance.

What other procedures can be done to improve the effect?

Deep lines aroudn the lips, the mouth, in the naso-labial fold and in the brow can be softened with dermal fillers. Alternatively, micro fat grafting can be used, in which case other areas suffering from natural fat loss can be reinstated to their youthful contours. "Top-ups' after several months may be needed.

  • The skin may be enhanced with laser resurfacing or chemical peel.
  • Dermabrasion of coarse lip lines or old acne scars can also be done..

After Care

There is usually one night of post-facelift dressing,

A facelift chin strap bandage is worn continually for a week; after which it is worn at night for another week.

How long does it take to recover?

It may take 2-3 weeks for the worst of the swelling and bruising to disappear and from 6 months to 1 year for the scars to fade to a white line.

The procedure can take 10 years off a patients appearance and lasts for seven to ten years, after which the continuing aging process may indicate another procedure.
