Workout Cooldown
Once you have finished your cardio program or weight
training your muscles are exhausted. In spite of this
it is extremely important to stretch out your muscles
and bring your heart rate and breathing back into synch
for normal activity.
Whilst the body is still warm or hot, the muscles
are easy to stretch and the mind is deeply relaxed due
the surge of hormones the exercise activates.
So now is a perfect time for a bit of deep relaxation
including deep breathing in your stretching routine.
This really helps to increase the oxygen to the muscles
and rid the muscles of toxins.
Exercise must work both the body and the mind. This
is the principle behind such fitness workouts as yoga
and pilates.
The Perfect Post Workout Cooldown
After you finish your workout, before you do your
normal streteches and cool down to get your heart rate
back to normal, try this deep relaxation routine:
- Lie down on your back
- Let your whole body relax as though it is sinking
into the floor
- Breathe in very slowly - while counting to 7 slowly
- Breathe out slowly – counting back down to
1
- Repeat the breath cycles 5 times
- Now begin your stretches using the same breathing
technique
- Hold each stretch for 2 or 3 breath cycles. With
each out breath you should find yourself being able
to stretch just that little bit more – but be
careful not to overdo it. No more than 80% max stretch
to prevent injury
Now both your body and mind feel terrific
